Today marks the end of a journey that began with a wistful post during the 2019 Snowflake Challenge - specifically Day 12 - Create Your Own Challenge, where I wrote that I’d love to run a Kingsman Reverse Bang challenge, and asked if anyone would be interested in helping me out.

My dear friend and frequent brain twin, [personal profile] anarchycox/[tumblr.com profile] anarchycox, answered the call. We immediately plunged into the planning, setting up a very aggressive challenge schedule, going over and modifying the rules and FAQ I’d developed for a similar challenge in other fandoms, figuring out our roles in managing the event, because these things don’t run themselves and there are so many moving pieces in a Reverse Bang, which is essentially two challenges in one - the arting and then the writing.

We were VERY pleasantly surprised at the number of people who’d signed up as artists and as writers. The amount of artwork and the variety of it, with rare pairs and fandom bicycles and interpret-how-you-will choices was stunning.

And our writers rose to the challenge, hopping on board the now-unusual requirement to work through Dreamwidth, and making their selections with a cut-throat rapidity that still makes my jaw drop. And best of all, every single piece of artwork got a story, something that is quite rare in a small and quiet fandom like Kingsman.

I’m a veteran when it comes to running these kinds of challenges, and I have to say that this was the best experience I’ve had as a moderator - most of which is due to AnarchyCox. I cannot stress how dedicated my co-mod was to this challenge; Anarchy was shoulder-to- shoulder with me all the way, a true partner in every decision.

And of course, I am immensely proud of our artists and writers, who added thirty incredible works to the Kingsman fandom. Actually, make that sixty, since art and story are separate fanworks, one inspiring the other.

There are two writers who I need to crown with extra special laurels - [personal profile] anarchycox/[tumblr.com profile] anarchycox and [personal profile] elletromil/[tumblr.com profile] elletromil, who had stepped in when two writers defaulted at the very last moment. They awe me, plain and simple.

This post is both a victory lap and a bit of self-examination. As smoothly as this challenge went, it was not without its problems.

1 - We were much too aggressive with the original schedule and extending it twice isn’t a good thing. We really hadn’t figured on so much artwork and so many writers taking on multiple stories - seven writers did two or more stories. And speaking as a writer who should have known better, there were quite a few writers who blew past the minimum word-count requirement without thinking and got themselves into a bind writing epics.

2 - Giving the writer the option to include their artist as a co-creator was, in retrospect, a not-so-great idea, since it impacts AO3 stats for any artist who happens to be a writer. If there are writers who did make their artist a co-creator, you may want to check with your artist and ask if they want to remain as a co-creator, or if they want the story to become a gift.

3 - Posting. We really don’t know if having an open posting window was the best approach. Kudos and comments were way down and we have to wonder if that’s because of the way posting was set up, or if that’s the nature of fandom and challenge works.

4 - One of the things we were kind of proud of was the Achievement Unlocked Round. A few authors did claim stories, but the rule was that nothing could be posted until the primary stories were finished posting. We hadn’t anticipated that it would take this long to finish (my dear Anarchy had just been burnt out with the three stories she’d written when she’d picked up the pinch hit and needed time to recover her mojo). If there are any writers who’d like to pick up artwork and write something else, or have started their Achievement Unlocked story and were patiently waiting for permission to post, please go ahead and do so. We’re keeping the AO3 collection open until the end of the year.

We will be setting up a poll in the next day or two to get your feedback on the challenge, but if you’d like to comment here, your input would be very welcome.

Once again, so many thanks to the awesome artists and authors who participated in the first round of the Kingsman Reverse Bang. Anarchy and I have ideas for something a little different for next year, and we hope to see you there.

PS: In case you haven't read all of the stories or want to revisit some of your favorites, you can find the whole collection here, on AO3.

I have been reminded that the HTML code for the AO3 sharing will not include the artwork, which we do want with the preview. I've also been reminded that Dreamwidth now has a non-html/rich text editor.

If you're using the share code from AO3, you cannot use the non-html/rich text editor, you must use the HTML editor.

To add the image to the post, you will need to use the image URL you'd put into the AO3 posting, with the following:

The quotation marks around the URL are required, just replace the text with the URL.

Paste this at the end of the AO3 share code.

Sorry about the last minute correction!

Story posting for Kingsman Reverse Bang (Round One) stories starts tomorrow! We find it really hard to believe that all of the hard work is now about to pay off. Where did the time go?

While many of you are veterans of fic challenges and are well-versed in the details, some of you are newbies and we'll be delighted to help you through the process. We've been trying to keep everyone informed about how to do this stuff, but some details may have gotten overlooked. Please don't hesitate to contact either of your mods for assistance if you can't find answers here:

How to post images on AO3

Posting to the AO3 Collection and cross-posting to the Dreamwidth KRB Community

What if I'm not done on the 18th?

ETA: How to add an image to the cross-posting entry

Again, we really appreciate all of the artists and authors who've participated in this challenge/exchange and all of the hard work you've put into creating fanworks for the Kingsman fandom.

We're getting so close! And I am so damn proud of all of you. Almost everyone has turned in their drafts and seems to be ready to start posting. This is going to be SUCH an excellent month for the Kingsman Fandom.

A few things ...

We have a nifty collection on AO3, named "Kingsman Reverse Bang" (it will come up "kingsmanreversebang" in the typedown list on AO3). You should add your story to the collection (please do!).

It is up to the author to decide whether to have the artist as a gift recipient or a co-creator - no rules on that, please decide amongst yourselves, but we'd like to see one or the other (or both, if that suits your fancy).

We'd also like for either the author or the artist to post an entry with the story here on the Dreamwidth community (use this link). To make your life easier, you can copy/paste the HTML from the AO3 share script into the New Entry page. Don't worry about tagging, your mods will handle that.

We hope that everyone - artists and writers - have found this to be a positive experience. Thank you to everyone, you've all be great.

Author Alert! Tomorrow starts the turn-in period for all Kingsman Reverse Bang stories.

Remember, posting starts on June 18th and has to be completed by July 1, unless an extension has been granted (several have, which impacts posting start for the Achievement Unlocked/Treat round, which will be addressed in a separate posting). You don't have to start posting on the 18th, but without a previously granted extension, you have to be done posting by the 1st of July.

You don't have to have your story finished when you turn it in (fwiw, both of your mods are still working on theirs), but it should be mostly done.

Please email your stories to the comm at kingsmanreversebang@gmail.com

If you have any questions, you can email the mods at that address as well.

Hard to believe but it's almost time for turn in and posting! All of your hard work is about to come to fruition.

This post is more than just a reminder of the impending due dates, it's a primer on how to add artwork to a story.

These instructions presume that you are posting on AO3 (since Tumblr has a drag and drop feature, and honestly, posting anything but a drabble on Tumblr is not a great idea). AO3 has an FAQ for how to insert images, but that presumes that you have the link to the hosted image.

If the artwork hasn't been modified since selection, authors can go to this post, right click on the image of your claimed artwork and copy the image address (it will begin with https://dl.dropbox.com/s/...). If artist and author have discussed and implemented changes and/or the artist has provided additional artwork, those images will need to be hosted. AO3 does not have hosting services, but you can use your Dreamwidth Account to upload them (under the "create" menu/header) and capture the URL there. You can also use Imgur or another hosting service, which will provide an image link.

If you have Dropbox, you can use that to host, but you'll need to make some changes to the URL - when you paste it into the AO3, it will be https://www.dropbox.com/s/, and you'll have to replace the "www." with "dl." so the image displays.

If you have trouble getting any of this to work, please contact me ([personal profile] elrhiarhodan) and I'll walk you through it. It's not hard, just a bit fiddly.
elrhiarhodan: (Kingsman)
[personal profile] elrhiarhodan
We're a little less than a month from turn in (I meant to do this last week but forgot), and it's a good time for authors to share snippets of their stories in progress and members of the comm - artists, other writers, cheerleaders - to read and comment.

This is not to be an exercise in constructive criticism in any way, shape, or form. It's a chance for everyone to cheer on writers, many of whom are writing more than one story. If there's something that you don't like, then say nothing. Same holds if there is something you see that doesn't make sense or has spelling and grammatical errors, please remember, these snippets are from works still being written and edited.

Authors, if you do wish to share your work in progress, please put the artist's name and a short description of the art and pairing in the comment subject line, e.g., "For AnarchyCox's Merlin in Tuxedo Mills & Boon Cover artwork, Merlahad" (to use my own as an example).

Your mods can't wait to see what's been cooking in your fertile brains!

NB: If you aren't a frequent visitor to Dreamwidth, you can get notifications of new comments in your email by clicking on the Track This link.

As always, if you have any questions, please contact your mods, [personal profile] elrhiarhodan and/or [personal profile] anarchycox.

You writers are just the best bunch out there. I've run SOOOOO many challenges and I've never had one where there hasn't been a single drop out.

Important dates remaining on the schedule:

Challenge Closes, Fics and Finished Art Due: June 15th, 2019
Posting Starts: June 18th, 2019
Posting Ends: July 1st, 2019
elrhiarhodan: (Kingsman)
[personal profile] elrhiarhodan
Tomorrow is the deadline for dropping out without penalty. Any dropouts after tomorrow will be defaults and result in a ban from the next challenge round.

If you can't complete, please let us know so we can timely arrange for pinch hits.

Thank you

Your mods have listened to what you've had to say in your check in survey - that while things are going well, they aren't going at the speed of light, and for writers who've taken on more than one prompt, panic is setting in.

Therefore, we are pushing almost the whole schedule over by a full month. Due dates for finished fic and art is now June 15th and posting will start on June 18th and close by July 1st. As long as every prompt has a posted and complete story, Achievement Unlocked bonus stories will start posting on July 2nd and must be completed by October 1st.

The only date that's not moving forward by a month is the deadlines for dropping out and pinch hitting. The last date for dropping out moves forward only by two weeks and pinch hit requests (if necessary) will go out the day after.

We hope this extension gives everyone peace of mind and less anxiety.

REVISED key dates for the challenge schedule:

Last day for author drop out: May 15th, 2019
Pinch hit requests: May 16th, 2019

Challenge Closes, Fics and Finished Art Due: June 15th, 2019
Posting Starts: June 18th, 2019
Posting Ends: July 1st, 2019

Achievement Unlocked (Bonus Round) Posting: July 2nd - October 1st (start date contingent on all prompts having a completed story already posted).

The complete Rules/FAQ can be found at the Community Profile and here.

Please don't hesitate to contact the mods if you have any questions at any point in the sign up. You can do so by commenting on any post, sending a PM via DW, or emailing the mods at the addresses in the FAQ. Our door is always open.

Yes, yes, we know that the prompt selections were only two weeks ago and we do not expect to hear that you've finished your stories, but we wanted to use this early check-in as a way to see that everything is going according to plan.

Sometime this week, between now and the coming Sunday, April 21, please fill out this survey for each of the prompts you've signed up to write for in the first two selection rounds (the ones on March 30 and April 6), and please be honest about how things are going. We want this to be fun for everyone, not an excuse to panic and flail and last minute drama (you get what we're saying, right?).

If you want, you can comment here that you've filled out the form (once for one prompt, twice for two prompts, three times ... well, you get the picture) and don't forget to put the number for the artwork you're checking in for in your response.

These are the prompts that are available for the "Achievement Unlocked" Bonus Claiming Round (psst - it's all of them). As in our post here, these prompts are available for anyone who is already writing a story for the Kingsman Reverse Bang, and while we do ask that you "claim" a prompt via a comment, multiple writers may claim the same prompt.

Stories written for this round cannot be published until all of the stories from the official claiming rounds are published complete, so the earliest the Achievement Unlocked round stories can start posting is June 2, 2019. Authors and artists won't be officially matched up, but an email notification will be sent around this time, just so everyone involved knows what's going on.

Attention writers! The Achievement Unlocked Bonus Art Prompt Claiming Round will be opening early. Unfortunately, both of your mods need to be out and about at 11 AM EDT, and since the prompts can be claimed multiple times and there is no confirmation, we're posting in now.

If you have questions about the Achievement Unlocked round, please check out this post will all of the necessary information.

Thank you for understanding the situation.

As we'd mentioned in the instructions for the Round 2 of art claims, the mods have come up with an exciting reward for all of the writers and artists, which we are calling "Achievement Unlocked" (one of your mods is a gamer).

Since all of the Art Prompts have been claimed (the achievement), we will be allowing writers to write additional stories for any of the prompts that strike their fancy (the unlocking). This is akin to the "Madness" round in a Remix challenge or a "Treat" round in an exchange challenge, but with a few differences because of the structure of the Reverse Bang.

1 – There is no formal claiming, but your mods do request that you let them know what prompt(s) you will be writing stories for. We will have a third prompt post and the comments will be moderated (remain hidden from view by everyone but the mods).

2 – There are no minimums for story length. The 5k minimum applies only to stories claimed in Round 1 and Round 2 (the guarantee that each artist gets a longer story as a reward for their artwork).

3 – Achievement Unlocked stories cannot be posted until all of the primary stories have been posted (that's the thirty stories for the thirty artworks). The posting period for Achievement Unlocked stories begins on June 2, 2019, unless there's a default and we've given a pinch hitter some extra time, which will delay the opening for the Achievement Unlocked round.

4 – The posting period for Achievement Unlocked stories runs until September 1, 2019. Yes, that's longer than the primary posting period, but this gives writers a chance to stretch their legs and write a whole bunch of stories, or one really long story.

5 – Writers who have defaulted on their primary story will not be permitted to post an Achievement Unlocked story, even if the writer has pulled out of the challenge before the dropout date. Writers who disregard this rule will not be permitted to participate in future rounds of the Kingman Reverse Bang.

6 – Artists who have signed up as writers may write a story for their own art.

7 – While creating additional artwork is never a requirement, that is double-true for Achievement Unlocked stories. Formal matching emails will not be sent out for these stories. At some point after the drafts for the primary stories are turned in, those writers who've signed up for Achievement Unlocked stories AND have turned in their drafts will be given the contact details for their artists. As with the primary round, Preferred Pairings and Wants are optional, authors must respect the Do Not Wants.

8 – Artists may opt-out of having their art available for the Achievement Unlocked round. Please email your mods at kingsmanreversebang@gmail.com and let us know if you want to exclude any or all of your art prompts before April 13, when the post with the art and the moderated comments will go up.

Here's the updated calendar and the usual speil.

Round Three "Achievement Unlocked" Selection: 11:00 AM EDT, April 13, 2019 - Countdown Timer
Author Check in (mandatory): April 21st, 2019
Last day for author drop out: May 1st, 2019
Pinch hit requests: May 3rd, 2019

Primary Challenge Closes, Fics and Finished Art Due: May 15th, 2019
Posting Starts: May 18th, 2019
Posting Ends: June 1st, 2019

Achievement Unlocked Round Posting Begins: When all of the primary round stories have been posted complete, but the earliest will be June 2nd.
Achievement Unlocked Round Posting Ends: September 1st, 2019

This morning's second round of claims is was a total success! Thank you to the authors who stepped up and agreed to take a second (or in the case of three authors) a third art prompt.

This means that all of the art prompts have been claimed and the promised achievement has been unlocked. But what that is will remain under wraps for another day or so as [personal profile] anarchycox and I work out all of the details.

The matchup emails will go out tomorrow evening.

Good morning peoples! The second round of art prompt claiming will commence at 11AM Eastern Daylight Time today, Saturday, April 6. According to the countdown timer, that's a little less than one and a half hours from the time of this post.

As a reminder, this prompt claiming is for the nine art prompts yet to be selected. The prompt numbers are the same as in the original posting.

As with the original claiming, you can pick up to three that you would want and will be confirmed for your available second choice. This time, if you want to be confirmed on two available prompts, please include that. We will be happy to confirm your selection after a full day.

elrhiarhodan: (Kingsman)
[personal profile] elrhiarhodan
Round Two of Art Prompt Claiming will open at 11 AM on Saturday, April 6, and you can track it with this new countdown timer.

The prompts available for Round Two are the nine (9) prompts still remaining (several people who'd signed up either dropped out or haven't selected yet). A post will go up with just those nine prompts (with their original numbers). This claiming is for writers who would like to write a second story. The same rules apply, five thousand word minimum, story has to be posted during the challenge posting window, and the deadlines for defaulting remain the same.

But we have an added twist. If ALL of the remaining prompts are claimed, a very special challenge bonus will be unlocked. We aren't going to tell you what it is right now, but I assure you it's unique for Reverse Bangs and really, truly awesome.

So, go take a look at the art prompts that are still available (the data for all of the claimed prompts has been struck through) and pick a prompt you'd like to write another story for. We just need nine hearty (and prolific) writerly souls and EVERYONE benefits.
elrhiarhodan: (Kingsman)
[personal profile] elrhiarhodan
If you have claimed an art prompt, you and your artist should have received an email from the KingsmanReverseBang email account with all of the relevant details. Artists and authors - please make contact and don't stand on ceremony.

If you haven't received the email, please PM or email the mods. It's possible that we didn't type your email address correctly, or a spam filter caught it.

If you are a writer and have not claimed a prompt yet, there are still plenty of wonderful prompts available, for all kinds of pairings (or no pairings, if that's your preference). We would ask, if you are not going to make a claim, please let us know. There are certain events that we have planned once all of the writers have claimed and all of the prompts are claimed.

Thank you to everyone who has been participating. We look forward to some amazing stories in the next few months.
elrhiarhodan: (Kingsman)
[personal profile] elrhiarhodan
As of the time of this post, sixteen writers made their claims and had them confirmed. Most of those claims came within the first 3 minutes!!!!

There are nine authors who haven't claimed yet, and there are still a LOT of great prompts (including almost all of the Hartwin prompts).

But it's Saturday and both of your mods will need to be AFK until later in the day, so if you make your claim between now and then, don't worry, we'll confirm when we get back.

Emails for artists and authors will start going out tomorrow. That's a bit of a long process, so be patient.

Thank you to the writers who've made their claims and to all of the artists!

See you this evening.

Now is the time for all Kingsman Reverse Bang writers to claim an art prompt. Please pick your top three selections and the Mods will confirm which prompt you'll be writing. Claiming is first come, first served. Instructions on how to claim a prompt were posted on Thursday, March 28, with links posted to Tumblr and Pillowfort.

There are thirty (30) gorgeous prompts that cover a range of styles and themes and pairings. The prompts are numbered, and the numbers are right above the corresponding artwork. The art is posted anonymously, but after the dust settles (Sunday or Monday), the writer and artist will be matched up in an email from the mods.

As always, if anyone has any questions, please contact the mods by email or PM.
